My latest conversation is with Paul Epstein, owner of the much-loved Twist & Shout Records in Denver. It’s long, so I broke it up into 3 parts and unfortunately, the video quality was crappy, so I had to use just the audio. I’m so grateful he agreed to this because I always enjoy our conversations about human psychology and diving deep into what makes people tick. He has such an interesting perspective and I’m sure you’ll enjoy hearing about the more personal side of his success as well.
To start, he tells the incredible story of how the store came into existence, what it takes to succeed and what has kept him going for the 27 years Twist & Shout has been around. I’ve obviously heard the story about the auction that started the store, but I didn’t know just how scary and surreal it was. It was a long time before the store enjoyed any kind of success and we talk a bit about how he was able to persevere through those tough first few years.
Paul points out the rare components of his own success: having the most effective business partnership with his wife Jill, and being able to balance art and capitalism. He found his passion early on and tried different things to ultimately put himself in a position where he took a big scary risk of spending all his money on the store and was forced to grow into a self-actualized adult.
