I have a game I play when I find my mind wandering into negative territory or when I get the overwhelming feeling that there are so many thoughts in my head, it might just explode. It can be done anywhere at any time and it’s so worth adding it to your list of things to do when you need to calm down but don’t have the time to sit and meditate. Try this: Start with the thought “I Am ____” and fill in the blank with as many positive things as you can muster. I guarantee you’ll get to a point where the thoughts flow automatically.
Sometimes when I’m in savasana in yoga and my mind is going crazy with the day’s to-do list instead of breathing in the moment, I’ll do this. I am present. I am patient. I am fulfilled. I am kind. I am perceptive. I am creative. I am rested. I am sought after. I am successful. I am loved. I am worthy. I am on the right path. I am eager for what’s coming. I am curious. I am stubborn at all the right times. I am alive, I am capable…Seriously, you’ll get on such a roll! There’s no limit to what you will come up with.
It’s really amazing how many positive thoughts line up for their turn. Not only does it take you out of a potential negative thought pattern, it makes you search for positive words and will ultimately retrain your brain to reach for those first in any situation.
