When she was five years old, Dame Stephanie Shirley was on the Kinder Transport train, which saved nearly 10,000 Jewish children from Nazi Europe. And thank god for that, because what she was able to accomplish in her lifetime is astounding. Her first company employed only women, and it pioneered the concept of women going back into the workforce after a break. She also developed flexible work methods, the ability for women to work from home, job shares and co-ownership programs during a time when women still couldn’t open a bank account without their husband’s signature. Shirley’s reasoning for why ambitious women have flat heads will give you a chuckle.
